Cathay July cargo volume up 18.1pc to 157,374 tonnes

HONG KONG's Cathay Pacific Airways has released combined statistics with Dragonair showing July cargo and mail volume grew 18.1 per cent to 157,374 tonnes year on year.

The cargo and mail load factor was 76 per cent, up 3.4 per cent. Yet capacity, measured in available cargo/mail tonne kilometres, grew 21.3 per cent. Tonnage also soared 23.4 per cent compared to a capacity increase of 9.2 per cent.

The rise in capacity in July was because all previously parked freighters were returned to service, while the increase in tonnage was attributed to sustained strong demand out of the key markets, said cargo chief James Woodrow.

Demand from Europe was softer than for transpacific routes. Yet the enhanced inbound loads into Hong Kong and China have helped Cathay to drive up its cargo and mail load factor, he noted.
