Russia will supply 21 Mi-17 helicopters to Afghanistan in cooperation with NATO in a commercial transaction valued at US$300 million with plans to increase the order to 56 by 2016 with first delivery in July 2010.
The medium twin-turbine Russian choppers can double as gunships and are built to take on desert and mountain terrain. The 25 Mi-17 Hips are deployed in the Afghan Air Force as troop and cargo transport and in rescue and evacuation missions in the war against the Taliban, reports Novosti news agency.
