DB Schenker Logistics offers boxed garments on hangers

Jul 12, 2010 Logistics

DB SCHENKERskybridge has developed a five-times re-usable cardboard box system for shipping foil wrapped garments on hangers, the company has announced.

The boxes, said the company, can be re-folded for return transport to Asia in ocean freight containers and render the garments ready to wear on arrival at the retailer's premises.

DB Schenkerskybridge is a solution combining air and ocean freight, cutting transit 30 to 50 per cent compared to ordinary ocean freight and also saves cost 30 to 50 per cent over air freight, the company claimed.

"The transport of exclusive textiles from the manufacturer to the boutique or department store on hangers also dispenses the need for additional preparation, with corresponding reductions in costs," the company said.

"We originally developed these boxes for a customer," said Schenker Asia Pacific retail fashion director Janaka De Silva. "The boxes go to Europe packed and they come back to Asia folded from Hamburg regularly."

Each garment is transported on a hanger and wrapped in foil, protecting garments from creases, dirt and damp, said the company. There is no need to prep merchandise before sale, saving labour costs.

Said Mr De Silva. "We wanted a simple and reliable solution which would also reduce the burden on the environment."
