Dachser builds Eurohub, introduces double-decker swap boxes

Jul 12, 2010 Logistics

CONSTRUCTION has commenced on the third Dachser-Eurohub near Clermont-Ferrand in central France for a 60,600-square-metre site creating 100 new jobs for the Combronde region at a cost of EUR10 million (US$12.66 million) and employing the use of double-deck swap containers.

The hub will enable 80 per cent of the French market to be reached within 24 hours without recourse to expensive express services. To realise this, Dachser needed a strategically favourable location, which the company found in Auvergne specifically Combronde in the heart of France with direct links to the A71 and A89 motorways.

"Construction of the French Eurohub illustrates how quickly and dynamically our pan-European network has developed since the first Eurohub opened eight years ago," said Dachser spokesman Bernhard Simon.

The central logistics platform links all branches in the French freight network. Every night, 55 trucks will arrive at the goods transshipment centre to be forwarded directly to their destinations.

"The concept foresees a complete reorganisation of our freight services: our goal is to create efficient, precisely timed and highly reliable transport systems. For customers, this means that we optimise delivery times," said Dachser France chief Philippe Tardieu.

The swap body "road container" advantages include a higher payload through double-deck loading provides space for 38 Euro pallets in one swap body. It also allows for flexible goods transshipment optimising goods flows and high level of load security due to modern stowage systems.
