Fresh food exporters demand greater supply chain visibility

Jul 7, 2010 Logistics

EXPORTERS of fresh produce are calling on transport service providers to offer them better track-and-trace and temperature-control monitoring.

"It's not enough to simply say to us 'your container arrived in the port two hours ago,'" Fran Dodd, logistics purchasing manager for the Irish Dairy Board, told the European Shortsea Congress.

"We want to know where it is and what the temperature of the unit is, or was. We need electronic proof of delivery as soon as it's been delivered, telling us where it has been delivered, whether it's been delivered in full and who signed for it; and finally, we ask for better integration with customs and excise at the port."

Mr Dodd said this would allow the shipper to "take the noise out of the system" and focus on exception reporting and better use of resources, reported London's International Freighting Weekly.
