Malaysian carrier will not cancel A380 order

Jul 1, 2010 Logistics

Malaysian Airline System won't cancel its order for six A380 super jumbos from European planemaker Airbus despite prolonged delays, according to Deputy Transport Minister Abdul Rahim Bakri, Dow Jones reported.

"At this juncture, MAS has no plans to rescind the order. Airbus is to compensate US$101.1 million (for the delays)," Abdul Rahim said.

The national carrier last week said it was in talks with Airbus and would consider cancelling the order if there is a further delay in the delivery of the planes.

The first of six A380 planes on order was originally slated for delivery from 2007, but a series of production-related delays at the European planemaker have caused delivery dates to be pushed back by five years. The airline is currently set to receive its first A380 in the first half of 2012.
