Sweden's dockers begin Israeli cargo boycott

Jun 25, 2010 Logistics

Sweden's Dock Workers Union have begun a week-long boycott of cargo to and from Israel to protest against the Gaza blockade and its raid on the flotilla last month, the Morning Star Online reported.

All 1,500 members of the union are participating in the week-long industrial action.

Stevedores in Gothenburg have already refused to handle about a dozen container ships containing cargo from Israel or goods to be shipped there.

The Swedish Dock Workers Union (SDWU) supported the international Freedom Flotilla aid convoy and demanded that the Israel lift its blockade on the 1.5 million people of Gaza.

SDWU spokesman Rolf Axelsson said that the boycott of Israeli ships and cargo had been launched "because of the assault on the Gaza flotilla that we supported and the blockade of the Gaza strip, which affects the civilian population."
