GLOBAL shipping, logistics and marine services group GAC says it played a key role in upgrading 45 kilometres of railway between Galle and Matara in Sri Lanka as part of the first phase of a plan to restore 120 kilometres of track by next March.
A team of GAC staff coordinated the delivery of the heavy parts in more than 500 containers shipped over from India, arranging their transportation, de-stuffing and stacking. Importing material is expected to be completed by November, reports the UK's Transport Intelligence.
GAC managed the delivery of 15,000 tons of concrete sleepers, intersection, steel girder and other essential parts and equipment to various sites between Galle and Matara for the principal contractor, IRCON International Limited.
"It was a challenging task, but we have been able to prove that our logistics team has a solid teamwork and is well-experienced. We are optimistic to continue our support in the second phase next month," said GAC Sri Lanka managing director Preethilal Fernando.
