SURFACE transportation trade via trucking, rail and pipeline between the United States, Mexico and Canada increased by 37 per cent in March to US$69.9 billion, according to Bureau of Transportation Statistics.
The agency said the total value of goods transported was, however, 1.2 per cent less than the March total in 2008 of $42.1 billion, reported American Shipper. Compared to February, surface transport trade between the North American Free Trade Agreement partners grew 17.6 per cent in March. Eighty-seven per cent of US trade with Mexico and Canada moves on land.
In March the value of imports carried by truck was 19.4 per cent higher in compared to March 2009, while the value of exports carried by truck was up 30.4 per cent.
US-Mexico surface transportation trade totalled $27.8 billion in March, up 39.1 per cent compared to the same month last year. The value of imports carried by truck was 39 per cent higher while the value of exports carried by truck was 31.6 per cent higher.
