Volga-Dnepr takes delivery of IL-76TD-90VD

Jun 4, 2010 Logistics

RUSSIA's state-run Chkalov Aviation Factory (GAO TAPOiCh) has delivered one of three on order of the new generation IL-76TD-90VD contracted by the Volga-Dnepr Leasing Company with JSC 'UAC - Transport Aircraft' at the MAKS Air Show in Moscow in 2007.

The third generation Ilyushin freighter completed its first commercial flight after US$90 million investment made by the Volga-Dnepr Group on a version which complies with international noise and emissions standards.

The prime advantages of the new version of the freighter, the older IL-76 was banned for failing to meet street noise and emissions requirements imposed by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), are its increased commercial payload to 50 tonnes and its PS-90A-76 engines that burn seven to nine per cent less fuel.

Loading of outsize and heavy cargoes is possible within the third generation freight by the use of 2 electric winches. The cargo compartment floor can be equipped with a rollerbed system to handle containers and pallets weighing up to five tonnes while the reinforced floor of the cargo compartment is able to support 'super heavy' cargoes.

"Today, the new IL-76 holds a significant niche in the airfreight market. Bringing the third IL-76TD-90VD into service is another important step in realising Volga-Dnepr Group's global strategy of fleet development, which forecasts increasing our fleet to up to 15-20 IL76TD-90VD aircraft by 2020," said Andrey Pakhomov, general director of Volga-Dnepr Leasing LLC in a Russia Transport Weekly.

Volga-Dnepr started its IL-76TD modernization program back in 2002 and now expects to take delivery of an additional two in 2011.
