Lufthansa cargo expects demand to rise

Jun 3, 2010 Logistics

Lufthansa Cargo, the logistics arm of German flagship airline Deutsche Lufthansa, expects demand for freight capacity to rise continuously, Dow Jones reported.

The company aims to activate one more out of the four planes temporarily grounded in the Californian desert in the coming two months

The first of the four planes was taken back into service at the start of May, which according to experts signalled an upturn in the global freight business.

The cargo unit had temporarily grounded four airplanes of the type MD-11 to reduce capacity and save costs during the economic crisis.

The improved demand is in part attributed to the fact that many companies are restocking their inventories after the crisis.

The recent positive development, particularly in the cargo operations, gave Lufthansa some reason for optimism. With the first-quarter earnings at the start of May, Lufthansa raised its earnings outlook for its logistics unit pointing to a gradual economic recovery helping increase demand for air freight services.
