Sharp decrease in combined container transport in 2009

Apr 30, 2010 Logistics

Combined transport decreased sharply in 2009. Based on preliminary data of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the volume of goods carried in Germany by combined container transport in total was 165 million tonnes in 2009; that was 20% less than in 2008. In combined transport, long-distance transport of goods is performed by railways and ships, while lorries collect or distribute those goods in short haulage. The main part of the journey by rail and waterways is therefore of crucial importance for the development of combined transport.

Combined transport of containers in 2009 was particularly affected by the financial and economic crisis. The decrease in the combined transport was still higher than the already considerable decrease in the total transport with railways and ships (–17% to 780 million tonnes).
