Siemens Mobility received an order from Rapid MetroRail Gurgaon Limited (RMGL) to build a metro line to the urban business district of Gurgaon Cyber City. The 6.1 kilometer line will link the new business and residential quarter about 30 kilometers south of downtown Delhi with the capital’s metro rail network. This is the first time that Siemens Mobility implements a complete rail solution in India: From vehicles to complete electrification and signaling to system integration, Siemens Mobility offers a complete system from a single source. The system will be handed over at the end of 2012.
Large cities such as Delhi are characterized by a rapidly growing population. New districts are formed and grow to form independent cities like Gurgaon, which is already the home of more than 500,000 people. Connecting this city to the rail network of the greater Delhi area requires a reliable mass transit system. With six stations over a length of 6.1 kilometers, the new metro line will connect Gurgaon Cyber City via the connecting station of Sikanderpur to the Line 2 of the Delhi metro (DMRC).
Siemens Mobility will supply five 3-car metro vehicles with aluminum design for the new line, which will run on the elevated track with standard gauge at an average speed of 30 km/h. The advanced signaling and automatic train control system from Siemens Mobility ensures that the requested headway of 90 seconds is achieved during peak hours. Due to this short headway, up to 30,000 passengers per hour can be transported. Safe and reliable operation is ensured by the electronic interlocking of the type Sicas ECC, the automatic train control system LZB 700 M with ATP (automatic train protection) and the ATS (automatic train supervision) system Vicos OC 501.
For the complete electrification of the line, Siemens Mobility will equip the traction power supply with DC 750 V including a third rail system for power collection. The power feed of the four substations and six railway stations will be implemented through a medium-voltage ring of AC 11 kV.
“The quality and fast project execution have already been demonstrated in different single source projects here in Delhi,” said Sanjiv Rai, CEO of the Joint Venture Rapid MetroRail Gurgaon Ltd. “But of course we also benefit from the global experience of Siemens with similar systems.” For the first time in India, a complete metro rail project is financed by the private sector. Rapid MetroRail Gurgaon Ltd. is a Joint Venture of ITNL ENSO Rail Systems Ltd. (IERS), IL&FS Transportation Networks Ltd. (ITNL) and DLF.
Siemens is the market leader for complete rail solutions and offers its customers complete systems from a single source. Siemens succeeded to enter the Indian mass transit market in 2004: Back then, the company equipped the Line 3 of the Delhi metro with the complete signaling and railway communications technology. All the extensions to Line 3, which is now 60 kilometers long, were fitted with instrumentation, control and safety systems. In May 2009, the next order was to supply the signaling, electrification and baggage logistics for the 23 km line of the Delhi Airport Rail Link, which will be commissioned in October of this year, in time for the Commonwealth Games. For the metro link to Gurgaon Cyber City, Siemens Mobility will, for the first time in India, supply not only subsystems but also assume responsibility for the key components and their integration, including the interfaces, for the construction of a complete system.
