HONG KONG Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl), the airport's No 1 ground handler, has announced its first quarter air freight volume growing 37.5 per cent year on year to 636,743 tonnes with March tonnage rising 30.8 per cent to 244,087 tonnes.
March export volumes showed year-on-year growth of 36.1 per cent to 131,349 tonnes while throughput in the first quarter increased 42.9 per cent to 338,446 tonnes. Imports in March increased 33.5 per cent to 63,740 tonnes while first quarter import tonnage rose 42 per cent to 174,569 tonnes.
Transshipments were up 15.7 per cent year on year to 48,998 tonnes in March while quarterly transshipments rose 19.8 per cent to 123,728 tonnes.
While noting that the last week in March overall air cargo volume hit an all time high, Hactl marketing manager Lilian Chan said: "While we believe that the strong volumes reflect the consistent recovery of world economy, we will not underestimate the potential challenges ahead."
