THE latest figures from Hong Kong Airport Authority showed that cargo volume surged 30 per cent year on year in February to 257,000 tonnes.

Passenger volume increased 17 per cent to 3.9 million, while aircraft movements rose 4.9 per cent to 22,270 flights.

This is the first time since July 2008 that the airport recorded growth in all three sectors.

Import value grew 28 per cent, export was up 44 per cent and transit cargo volume increased eight per cent. In the first two months of the year, import volume increased more than 40 per cent year on year while transit cargo volume rose more than 10 per cent. Cargo traffic to and from all trade markets all registered robust growth.

Hong Kong Airport Authority chief executive Stanley Hui said February results were encouraging, reflecting the consistent recovery of world economy.

In the first two months, the airport handled 558,000 tonnes, up 36.9 per cent over the same period last year. Passenger volume rose 6.9 per cent to 7.9 million. Aircraft movement went 0.6 per cent up to 45,730 flights. The passenger and cargo volume have recovered to the same level as in the first two months in 2008 when downturn had not yet come, though aircraft movement is still 5.7 per cent less.

Mr Hui said according to the schedules submitted to the Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department, there will be 15 per cent more flights this summer than there were in the same period a year ago, meaning that the industry is increasing services to cope with demand growth.
