Mar 22, 2010 Logistics

CARRIERS cut rates on the Asia Europe routes for the first time in 13 weeks by US$60-$47 bracing for rising capacity of 22,000-TEU, seven per cent of overall capacity, according to Paris-based Alphaliner newsletter.

The rates now stand at $2,104/TEU to northern Europe and $1,998/TEU to the Mediterranean reflected in a drop of 24.78 points on the Shanghai Containerised Freight Index.

Further rate drops are predicted with more capacity bumped up to as high as 10 per cent for the year, said Alphaliner. "These moves will ease the capacity crunch in the market, which the trade has been facing since late December, following a strong recovery of demand figures."
