DAMCO, Maersk's logistics arm, has appointed Remo Eigenmann as the new head of its air freight division.
Mr Eigenmann's task will be to increase demand for Damco air freight "As Damco, we have industry strength in our supply chain management and ocean freight offering and delivery, but felt we could further strengthen our air freight offering to complete our offering to our customers. We have seen an increase in the need for competitive air freight solutions from our customers and clearly seen a market gap and a possibility to further grow that segment," said Damco chief commercial officer Martin Thaysen.
Mr Eigenmann is a Swiss national who has worked for ABB, Swissair and AT Kearney and also was with Panalpina six years where he was in charge of the reorganisation of a gateway in the US, the development of the worldwide airfreight strategy, and the implementation of a global airfreight IT system. He was also head of Panalpina's global airfreight organisation.
"We want to build our capabilities, penetrating into geographies and industry verticals where we have minimal or no presence," said Mr Eigenmann.
In 2008, Damco achieved a net turnover of US$2.8 billion, shipped more than 500,000 TEU of ocean freight, air freighted 60,000 tonnes of cargo, and handled two million TEU for its supply chain management customers.
