US trucks drive into recovery during first month of 2010

Mar 2, 2010 Logistics

SEASONALLY adjusted For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index showed an increase of 3.1 per cent in January which followed a revised rise of 1.3 per cent in the previous month, according to the American Trucking Associations (ATA).

The index reached its first peak since the high of September 2008 at 110.4 but with capacity tighter rates may be pressured.

ATA chief economist Bob Costello said although he is lowering his expectations of a mirroring of January's robust growth in the year ahead he believes the industry is finally moving in the right direction, reported Newark's Journal of Commerce. "Although there are still risks that could throw the rebound off track, the likelihood of that happening continues to diminish," he said.
