Chongqing Airport export volume down nearly 25pc in 2009

SOUTHWESTERN China city Chongqing's airport customs recorded an aggregate export cargo volume of 29.2 million tonnes in 2009, down 24.8 per cent year on year, with a value of US$140 million that slid 23.3 per cent over 2008, Logistics Week reported.

Value of exports under the form of general trade fell 34 per cent to $85.5 million, accounting for 60 per cent of the total export value. The percentage was 9 per cent less than in 2008.

US was the largest market for the exports handled by the airport with a value of $26.1 billion, down 29 per cent, taking up 20 per cent in the export value total compared to 18 per cent in 2008. Exports to Hong Kong dived 49 per cent in value to $8.7 million from 2008's $16.9 million. Value of cargo exported to Canada rocketed 62 per cent to $9.6 billion. The rest of the major export markets were India, Taiwan and Italy, with a growth of 16 per cent, 9 per cent and 25 per cent respectively.

Obvious decrease was seen in the value of export cargo using direct flight service, while those transshipped via Beijing Airport or Shenyang Airport recorded growth in value. Exports using direct service reduced by 33 per cent to $76.3 million. Those transshipped in Beijing Airport rose 2.5 per cent to $39 million and those in Shenyang Airport surged 235 per cent to $6.8 million.
