Jan 25, 2010 Logistics

SRI Lanka's main Colombo airport experienced record high cargo volumes in December of 16,070 tonnes, topping its March 2006 monthly all-time high of 16,033 tonnes.

The 1,213 flights that arrived at Bandaranaike International Airport's main terminal came from 23 airlines of which flag carrier Sri Lankan Airlines accounted for 8,163 tonnes, Dubai-based Emirates at 2,338 tonnes, and Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific carried 986 tonnes.

"We are pleased to witness the recent growth in cargo handling, and are hopeful that the trend will continue throughout 2010, as the world begins moving out of recession," said airport cargo chief Janaka Munasinghe in an Asia Today report.
