Goods distribution in town centres and urban areas is made increasingly difficult by traffic spaces which become ever tighter and the simultaneously deployed traffic calming measures. Therefore, when it comes to distribution, agile, easily manoeuvrable and quick to load and unload vehicles are now needed. Schmitz Cargobull has specially developed a single axle curtainsider for just this transport task, the "S.CS CITY", which thanks to optimum manoeuvring characteristics represents a genuine alternative to existing trucks or distribution lorries. Due to a clear internal loading length of 11,050 mm, the agile S.CS CITY curtainsider semitrailer has space for 27 Euro pallets. A further plus point is fleet flexibility, because while the S.CS CITY is being loaded or unloaded, the tractor can be used elsewhere, even to pull standard trailers.
The high manoeuvrability results from an axle equipped with steering link power steering.
To check out the agility as accurately as possible, the vehicle was put through its paces in the in-house test-centre on a track involving extensive manoeuvring and circular driving. The result was that with the single axle S.CS CITY, a turning circle with a circumference approximately 2,700 mm shorter than that of a standard 3-axle semitrailer with rigid axle unit was achieved. The semitrailer agility is improved in both forward and reverse travel, thus permitting optimum driving on narrow town streets. In comparison with drawbar trailers, a single axle semitrailer is a much easier and safer proposition when it comes to driving.
The new curtainsider semitrailer S.CS CITY has an approved gross weight of 25 tonnes with a permissible axle unit load of 10 tonnes and a semitrailer load of 15 tonnes. Due to this high semitrailer load and an extended landing gear position, the trailer is also suitable for three-axle tractors, especially for the Scandinavian market. The clear loading width of the semitrailer is 2,480 mm, while there is a clear internal length of 11,050 mm. The 28 mm plywood floor supports a forklift weight of 7.1 tonnes. Fifthwheel heights of 1,090 to 1,150 mm are possible. With a twin tyre 275/70 R22.5 layout, Schmitz Cargobull has decided on 22.5" disc brakes.
The vehicle is fitted with three pairs of middle stanchions as standard. A lashing hole in the outer frame in conjunction with 10 lashing rings (each supporting 2,000 kg tensile force) offers optimum load securing options.
Proven, and therefore also standard fit on the S.CS CITY, is the smooth-running Schmitz Cargobull Safety Roof. The heavy duty version (880 g/m2) of the sliding curtains is fitted as standard for improved load securing. Underlining its safety and body strength, the S.CS CITY has received the load securing certificate in accordance with DIN EN 12642 CODE XL, also for drinks transport.
Thanks to the sophisticated modular system, the vehicle can be equipped for individual transport tasks using a wide range of additional accessories.
The vehicle and the optional additional accessories are based on the same high quality standards as other Schmitz Cargobull series production vehicles.
Classical accessories for inner-city unloading areas are e.g., tail-lifts, which Schmitz Cargobull also offers with an optional swing flap. A further option with added safety for winter driving is the RoofSafetyAirbag (RSAB) because ice sheets and snow on the roof are a significant source of danger for following traffic. Once pumped up, an internally mounted central air hose positioned under the roof tarpaulin prevents water and snow from collecting and thus "disposes" of the dangerous roof load.
Last but not least, the S.CS CITY, like all Schmitz Cargobull vehicles, is equipped with a bolted and galvanized chassis. To maintain the optimum, all-round corrosion protection, the individual chassis components are galvanized prior to bolting. Schmitz Cargobull offers a 10 year guarantee for the chassis against rusting-through of any of the galvanized parts.
