PRINCE RUPERT, B.C. (CP) - British Columbia's newest gateway to Pacific trade is officially open for business.
The $170-million Fairview container terminal was celebrated

B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell said the facility opens up a new high-speed, congestion-free trade corridor between Asia and North America.
The Fairview terminal at the expanded port of Prince Rupert has been designed to handle 500,000 conventional size containers.
The B.C. government said construction on the project has taken two years and was completed on time and on budget.
It was jointly funded by Maher Terminals, CN Rail, the provincial and federal governments and the Prince Rupert Port Authority.
In a release, CN Rail said it will offer customers the fastest, most efficient and cost-effective routing for Asian traffic destined to and from central North America, including to Toronto, Montreal, and Chicago.
It said that as the closest port to Asia by up to 58 hours of sailing time compared to any other west coast port, Prince Rupert gives shippers approximately one extra round-trip voyage a year.
