Output of new passenger cars in the Czech Republic grew by around 3 percent year-on-year to a record amount of around 970,000 vehicles in 2009, Automotive Industry Association (SAP) head Antonin Sipek said at a press conference Thursday.

According to Prague Daily Monitor, the figure is an estimate and final results will be available within several days, Sipek said.

Skoda Auto produced fewer cars in its Czech plants owing to a shift of production to facilities abroad. In contrast, output of TPCA in Kolin (central Bohemia) and Hyundai in Nošovice (northern Moravia) increased.

According to information made public earlier, TPCA sold 332,000 cars last year and Hyundai sold around 118,000 cars. Domestic production of Škoda Auto accounted for the rest.

The category of lorries registered a drop in output of 70 percent to more than 1,000 vehicles. Output of busses fell by around 12 percent to 2,900 units.

Sales of new passenger cars and light utility vehicles in the Czech Republic dropped by 11.1 percent to 181,086 units last year, according to data from the Car Importers Association (SDA) made public Thursday.
