Russian PM announces major shipbuilding plan

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has recently announced a major US$5 million shipbuilding scheme in Vladivostok.

Mr Putin said that the shipyard and its partners would be able to handle demand through to 2020. The shipyards plan to complete 100 icebreakers, freighters and rescue vessels, as well as 250 ships for domestic waterways, by 2015.

Mr Putin also symbolically opened the 2,700km-long Eastern Siberia Pacific Ocean oil pipeline which will transport oil from Russia to Asia. During the ceremony, Mr Putin saw off the first 10,000-tonne shipment to Hong Kong.
