AMERICAN Trucking Associations' data for November show its highest increase of 2009 in its seasonally adjusted index of 2.7 per cent with an overall tonnage index decline in a 3.5 per cent drop year on year, an improvement on the year and on month previous of 5.2 per cent.
Despite the not seasonally adjusted index showing a decline of eight per cent month to month in November taking the change in tonnage hauled by ATA members before adjustment the decline slowdown is lessening.
ATA economist Bob Costello said the trend was showing signs of recovery based on economic conditions improving and correction of "bloated inventories". He said: "Slowly, but surely, truck freight has started the recovery process and November's solid increase is a very positive sign."
Mr Costello says there is room for caution with an up-and-down recovery ahead. "I continue to believe that both the economy and truck tonnage will exhibit starts and stops in the months ahead, but the general trend should be for moderate growth," he added.
