Cargotec tests Kalmar tractors with dynamometer

Dec 28, 2009 Logistics

FINLAND's Cargotec has begun testing its Kalmar terminal tractors by using a custom-built dynamometer at its Tampere facility ahead of plans for product development, prototype production, testing of yard cranes, straddle/shuttle carriers, heavy terminal tractors, and automation solutions.

The Kalmar terminal tractor will be driven to the test room, which has a dynamometer and loading systems to simulate various working conditions. The terminal tractor will be parked on the dynamometer's rollers, which can be adjusted according to the wheelbase. The loading system places a weight of up to 50 tonnes on the fifth wheel of the terminal tractor, and the lift boom's active tilting can be tested by a maximum 10 degrees.

The dynamometer tests the engine, transmission, axles, and brakes as well as the lifting capacity, stability, various temperatures and axle loads. In addition, the hydraulic pressure, pneumatic pressure, and electrics are tested on-site.

Cargotec heavy terminal tractors director Timo Matikainen said the dynamometer gives objective results for the terminal tractors without the possibility for human error and will be used to develop products to include driving simulated controlled tests and measure the performance of the tractor at its maximum levels.

"Tests are not affected by outside temperature or other external conditions. We receive numeric and graphic data, which can be used in comparing specifications. Our customers can also visit us and observe the testing as well as obtain a report of the test results," he said in a company statement.

Cargotec provides a wide range of Kalmar equipment, including ship-to-shore cranes, yard cranes, shuttle and straddle carriers, reachstackers, empty container handlers, terminal tractors and log stackers.
