ACCORDING to east coast fish buyers in the North of England the move by Iceland's government to add a weight surcharge of five per cent on container fish was the lesser of two evils after last year's threat of a 10 per cent levy.
The weight surcharge is generally accepted to be just given weight loss occurs after catch and following transportation according to a report in Edinburgh-based Fish Update.com.
The move by Iceland fisheries minister Jon Bjarnson will affect container fish shipped to markets to Humber ports like that of Grimsby. It follows resistance from Icelandic fishermen to weigh at source rather than at landing.
Humber's fishing community asked the Icelandic government to rethink its previous 10 per cent surcharge increase last year, citing its economic prosperity rested on the vigorous export trade it enjoyed between the countries.
