THE government in Nigeria's northern state of Bauchi plans to set up an inland container depot in partnership with the Nigerian Shippers Council, according to comments made by Governor Isa Yuguda of Bauchi State during a one day seminar organised by the NSC.
Governor Yuguda was cited as saying that the aim of the depot would be to improve inland transportation not only in the state but in the entire northern region, and to make it easier for exporters and importers to transport their cargo thereby reducing congestion at the seaport, reports the Lagos Daily Triumph.
So far a site for the inland container depot has been found and the design plan has been obtained and submitted to Nigerian Shippers Council.
"Federal government is aware of difficulty Nigerians importers, exporters and business inland face in moving goods from production to markets and I want to assure that the federal government would not leave any stone unturned in solving this problem," the executive secretary/chief executive officer of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Capt Adamu Biu, was quoted as saying in the report.
