GOVERNMENT of south western city of Chengdu has signed an agreement with Shenzhen's Jade Cargo International to build the city into an international air cargo hub.
On the same day, a Boeing 747 freighter of Jade Cargo carrying 117 tonnes of garments and hi-tech electronics took off from Chengdu airport for Vienna.
Being Chengdu's first European service, the route starts from Hong Kong, connecting Chengdu to Vienna, Amsterdam, Dubai, before returning to Chengdu, offering three flights a week.
CEO of Jade Cargo International Kay Kratky said the company decided to expand business in central and western China two years ago. After detailed investigation, Chengdu stood out from other candidates.
Mr Kratky also announced a three-step plan to develop Chengdu into central and western China's cargo hub over three to five years.
The first step is to bring the city into Jade Cargo's air route network. The carrier plans to add one extra flight every season in the future to the newly launched Chengdu cargo service.
The second step is to integrate the professional experience of Jade's freight handling arms in Tianjin, Shanghai and Shenzhen to set up a cargo handling centre in Chengdu.
The third step is to take Chengdu as Jade's hub in central and western China, to connect it with other major airfreight markets in the world and offer global transport solutions there.
Jade will send a group to Chengdu to discuss plans with the city every season with a view to adding more international cargo services.
The Chengdu Logistics Administration Office said the city is an ideal transit hub in western China for cargo from Asia to Europe, and is working on attracting cargo to Europe from neighbouring regions in Yangtze River valley, Bohai Rim and South East Asia to come to the city first for further distribution.
The government aims to achieve this in three years. Jade Cargo International is a joint venture of Lufthansa, Shenzhen Airlines and German investment company DEG.
