According to the general director of Bulgarian Railways (BDZ), Pencho Popov, passengers of delayed trains will soon be able to receive compensation, according to Railway Market - CEE Review.
The new EU regulation, which obliges railway companies to pay compensation to passengers if the train is late at the fault of the carrier, will be implemented already next year, Popov said.
The BDZ’s readiness to pay compensation for delays might be surprising, as many eastern European countries like Romania, Poland or the Czech Republic recently asked for a suspension from the new EU directive. They argued, that they still need some time to prepare themselves for such a regulation.
Currently, Bulgarian Railways has approx. BGN 160m debt and a BGN 100m credit, that has to be paid in 2010.
