DHL Express launches direct HK to Surabaya service

Dec 14, 2009 Logistics

DHL Express has started offering a direct flight from Hong Kong to Surabaya, Indonesia, in a bid to facilitate the increasing volume of import cargo from Hong Kong to East Java.

The flight operates four times a week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, and will not only carry freight from Hong Kong, but also from North Asia and the US, a DHL statement said.

It said the new direct flight from Hong Kong International Airport to Djuanda Airport in Surabaya provides customers with a faster transit time of up to 24 hours, compared to the previous non-direct flight, by alleviating the need for clearance in Jakarta and domestic transportation from Jakarta to Surabaya.

The development comes after shipment volumes on DHL's Hong Kong to Surabaya routes rose by 18 per cent year on year between July and November 2009. Major shipments were from China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea and Taiwan.

"Hong Kong-Surabaya is an important trade lane for DHL because China is the largest supplier of non-oil and gas products to East Java, with the value amounting to US$202.62 million in October 2009," said David Ng, senior technical advisor at DHL Express/PT Birotika Semesta.

"With this new flight, we expect to be able to significantly enhance connectivity, service reliability and on-time performance for our customers in the East Java, Hong Kong, North Asia and US."
