KOREAN AIR, the world's largest international commercial air cargo carrier, has announced it has beaten its own record for export air cargo shipments this month thanks mostly to soaring demand of South Korea's IT products.
South Korea flag carrier will operate an additional 41 freighter flights this month, its largest operation ever, to move a record volume of outbound cargo consisting of LCD panels, cellular phones, laptops and car parts bound for the US and Europe.
The record additional flights, carrying a total of 4,100 tons come after two busy months in September and October when the airline flew 10 and 13 extra freighter flights, respectively.
Korean Air moved 30,834 tons of outbound cargo in September and 33,066 tons in October, up 33 per cent and 24 per cent respectively from a year earlier.
For November, Korean Air has scheduled the largest number of additional flights as outbound cargo volume for the month is expected to jump 57 per cent to a record 35,000 tons.
The increased traffic coincides with the usual peak season of the cargo business ahead of American Thanksgiving and Christmas while a recovery in consumer spending has also fuelled growth in recent months.
Korean Air Cargo operates 25 Boeing 747 freighters and four new freighters (three B747-400Fs and one B747-8F) will be delivered next year.
