A new Danish study has shown that shipping accounts for much less air pollution than originally supposed.
Shipping was thought to be responsible for 68 percent of the world’s sulphur emissions, but the new study found that the figure was actually only about 37 percent.
The investigation was carried out by Danmarks Miljoudersogelser and the University of Aarhus, for the Partnership for Cleaner Shipping between the Danish Environmental Protection Agency and the Danish Shipowner’s Association.
The study was based on information of ship traffic in Danish waters, shipping routes and engine loads, and the combined emissions of advanced ship models.
