THE Callao marine terminal at Lima, with its developed capacity of 850,000 TEU capacity a year and 1.4 million TEU by end of its second phase, has received a visit from UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Dubai World and DP World chairman Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem and CEO Mohammed Sharaf welcomed the delegation together with Peruvian Transport Minister Enrique Cornejo.

Sheikh Abdullah, UAE and DP World officials also met Peruvian President Alan Garcia Perez and Foreign Minister Jose Antonio Garcia Belaunde to discuss bilateral relations and investments as well as the achievements of the Peruvian economy.

The new terminal at Muelle Sur-Callao is to open early next year, a year ahead of schedule. The concession was granted to DP World Callao in July 2006 and construction work started in April 2008. Ninety-eight per cent of the reclamation work have been done, which consists of creating space for a stacking yard.

DP World Callao will have a 650-metre quay with two 325-metre moorings, and with its 14 metres alongside, able to receive super postpanamax ships.

By the end of the year, the first gantry cranes and yard cranes will be commissioned and other port vehicles put into service, said the DP World statement.
