SriLankan Airlines Colombo terminal to double capacity

Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport is to double cargo capacity by January, said its new operator, state-owned SriLankan Airlines, which recently assumed control from state-owned Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Ltd., the Shipping Gazette reports.

The new export facility will allow for the existing cargo area to handle imports within a 13,300-square metre building, which will be enabled to move perishables, courier cargo, mail, reefer cargo, animals and quarantined items with the help of barcodes.
Terminal sales chief Mohamed Fazeel said the new building will help to start an economic revival, according to the Lankan Business Online report. "Cargo is a key area of the airline's business and annually contributes 14 per cent to the group's revenue."

"The new building will greatly increase our warehouse and handling capacity to 300,000 tonnes per annum," said cargo chief Janaka Munasinghe.
