European shippers call for more communication over Cargo 2000

More freight forwarders and airlines need to become involved in the air cargo industry's Cargo 2000 performance initiative and help feed back information to shippers about what is going on, believes the European Shippers' Council (ESC).

Few shippers understand what Cargo 2000 is or have even heard of the performance measures being implemented around the world, claimed ESC secretary general Nicolette van der Jagt at the recent IATA (International Air Transport Association) World Cargo Symposium in Rome, Italy. With only 17 airlines and seven freight forwarders being certified as Cargo 2000 compliant, it is little wonder that shippers have not widely heard about this important initiative to improve the quality of air freight.

The ESC explained that the symposium track session relating to Cargo 2000 had reported on the progress being made by members of that initiative implementing the phase one programme (airport to airport) performance monitoring and the phase two programme (shipments from origin to destination). We are pleased to hear that significant progress is being made – in particular with a second freight forwarder to reach phase two operations in the air freight quality initiative Cargo 2000 − but disappointed we have not been kept closer to the story in order to inform shippers, stated van der Jagt.

If shippers are aware of this then they can force those carriers and freight forwarders not in Cargo 2000 to join it or else risk losing their business to those that are. We recognise the importance of standard measures of performance for benchmarking performance, and as a tool for continuance quality improvement by highlighting where performance can be improved and acting to resolve those issues.

Cargo 2000 is an IATA-backed air cargo industry initiative aimed at implementing a new quality management system for that sector. The stated core objective is to "implement processes, backed by quality standards that are measurable, to improve the efficiency of air cargo.
