THE Guam International Airport Authority and PacAir Properties have completed the development of a US$26.5 million air cargo facility that is intended to attract more cargo and revenue to Guam.
Due to open September 1, the new state of the art integrated cargo facility was paid for via a partnership with PacAir, which invested $26.5 million to build the facility which is expected to help facilitate daily operations at the airport in anticipation of increased traffic.
PacAir general manager Frank Arriola was quoted as saying in an online report by Kuam TV Guam: "This building is built like a bunker - concrete, fortified and it is also backed up by a generator so we have power 24/7. This 49,682 square metres air cargo facility is very modern and state of the art. This is very significant because it is going to be able to accommodate the increase in air cargo coming along with a population increase that accompanies the military build up."
The new air cargo facility is equipped to handle all sorts of cargo from the mainland, but at an expedited rate as there is only a one day turnaround for freight. The new facility is expected to attract new carriers and operators to Guam, which would bring in more revenue, the report said.
"Basically it opens a door before there was a bottleneck with the lack of building capacity. Now we are looking forward to attracting more business coming with the military build up, it will allow freight to come in and out and provide better service for our people," said Mr Arriola.
