Aug 28, 2009 Logistics

Heathrow is preparing for a busy bank holiday weekend with 842,100 passengers due to travel through the world’s busiest international airport between Friday and Monday.

The number of people expected to travel through Heathrow is up 1% on last year’s August bank holiday, following on from July’s figures which was the airport’s third busiest month ever. The busiest day of the weekend is expected to be Friday with 216,700 passengers.

The top ten destinations for passengers from Heathrow this year are New York, Dubai, Dublin, Chicago, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Amsterdam, Madrid, Edinburgh and Frankfurt.

Malcolm Robertson, a BAA spokesperson, commented: “This bank holiday weekend is even busier than last year, with passengers flying out on holiday or visiting friends and family up and down the country and around the world. These increased figures reflect Heathrow’s unique position as a hub airport, which enables us to provide several daily flights to exciting and diverse destinations like New York, Dubai and Hong Kong that are proving the most popular this weekend.”

Passengers travelling this weekend are reminded of the security restrictions in place at UK airports. Liquid items can be carried in individual containers not exceeding 100ml each, providing they are carried in one resealable clear plastic bag measuring no more than 20cm x 20cm (8” x 8”).  Passengers should check with their airline for additional hand-baggage restrictions.
