SWISS logistics giant Kuehne + Nagel has been selected by LSG Sky Chefs, a provider of in-flight services, to manage its supply chain activities at Malpensa Airport in Italy.
Under the three-year contract Kuehne + Nagel will be responsible for managing goods inbound services at LSG Sky Chefs' customer service centre at Milan Malpensa, including the multi-temperature warehouse in the airport area.
The supply chain services will comprise storage (mix between stocked and just-in-time flows), handling, order preparation by unit and delivery to the LSG Sky Chefs' catering operation area, which serves more than 25 airlines taking off from Malpensa, a statement from Kuehne + Nagel said.
Services also cover customs formalities for inbound and outbound materials (air, sea and overland transport), as well as value-added services, such as IT support for planning, visibility of the supply chain and controlling functions.
Additionally, in close cooperation with SkylogistiX, the joint venture between LSG Sky Chefs and Kuehne + Nagel will provide selected supply chain management functions, such as supplier order and call-off management, stock level and distribution management.
The Kuehne + Nagel's team will handle 160,000 tons each year, representing 3,800 items, including dry, fresh and frozen food and equipment products. Depending on the airline, the aircraft may need to be stocked with up to 350 different articles before the scheduled departure time.
Silvio Canettoli, LSG Sky Chefs Regional COO for Mediterranean and Africa said: "We have selected Kuehne + Nagel because this company understands well the in-flight logistics business, and we are confident that our cooperation will over time deliver the expected results."
