Pakistan to improve inland water transportation system

Jul 20, 2009 Logistics

The Pakistan Government last week announced that 13 dams would be built in all four provinces of Pakistan.

The Inland Water Transport Authority meeting, attended by President Asif Ali Azardari, discussed issues such as the construction of small and medium dams and the development of hybrid seeds to increase agricultural output.

The president observed that water transportation was the most economically efficient mode of moving heavy commodities, and that the building of infrastructure should not be delayed. He said that the project would be rolled out over two phases and that the groundbreaking of the first phase would not be later than October 2009.

The US$30.5 million project will be financed through the current year’s Public Sector Development Programme budget. In addition, a Memorandum of Understanding has been signed with China to provide some financing.
