Jul 2, 2009 Logistics

SAN FRANCISCO—While China and Taiwan still have a tense diplomatic relationship, their national-flag carriers are expanding their joint services.

To help minimize the impact soaring bunker price and responding to the deteriorating market conditions between the Far East and South Africa/ East Coast South America,COSCON and Evergreen will combine their existing operated ESA and FAX sailings into new ESA deployment.

For the carrier community, the deal represents a whole new dynamic in corporate cooperation.

“When China and Taiwan agree to get together, you know the situation has become desperate,” he said Edward Zaninelli, vice president Trans-Pacific Westbound Trade, OOCL. Speaking at the Agriculture Transportation Coaltion’s (AGTC) annual conference in San Francisco last month, he said also noted that shippers will see some “funny marriages” as various nation states cooperate on vessel sharing.

The new service, which is expected to start on July 6, 2009 from Shanghai, will comprise eleven vessels with a capacity of 3,500 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units). COSCON will provide four vessels and Evergreen will provide seven vessels separately.

The first vessel to depart will be “MASS 0816W” from Shanghai on July 6,

Port rotation is as follows: Shanghai / Ningbo / Kaohsiung / Yantian / Hong Kong/ Singapore / Tanjung Pelepas PTP / Durban / Cape Town / Montevideo / Buenos Aires / Paranagua / Santos / Durban / Singapore / Hong Kong / Shanghai. Port of Kaohsiung and Paranagua are served by Evergreen’s vessels only.

Through the combined weekly service, a wider scope of port calls will be offered as well as fixed day weekly departures.

A few weeks ago, Evergreen had also decided to restore freight rates in the Asia-South Africa and Asia-East Coast of South America trades.

“We believe that it is essential to bring our freight level back to a sustainable and viable levels, so that we can continue providing the comprehensive network of liner services that our customer accustomed to,” said spokesmen. “In view of above mentioned, we therefore reluctantly to announce that Evergreen Line must now do rate restoration in above mentioned trades, effective July 1, 2009.”
