Martinair Cargo deploys two KLM liveried freighters

Jun 23, 2009 Logistics

THE KLM Group has implemented a move that enables Martinair Cargo to operate two KLM Boeing 747-400 Extended Range Freighters in its network.

While the aircraft will retain their own KLM livery, they will also display the "operated by Martinair" slogan for at least six months during the term of the arrangement.

KLM will ground two older B747-400 Boeing Converted Freighters, as part of efforts to find fleet synergies with Martinair, now a fully-integrated member of the group.

The move was prompted by the need to temporarily reduce cargo capacity in the downturn. The plan had originally called for two Boeing 747-400 freighters at both KLM Cargo and Martinair Cargo to be removed from the fleet.

The action would have resulted in two relatively new Boeing 747-400 ERFs being parked by KLM, while two older Martinair B747-400 BCFs would have remained in service.

"In both financial and operational terms, it is more favourable to put the two KLM aircraft to use in the Martinair fleet for the time being. The KLM freighters are more economical to operate and offer greater capacity," a joint statement from the carriers said.

"Martinair will be leasing the aircraft from KLM in line with the interchange concept. In this manner, Martinair pilots and procedures can be used to transport Martinair cargo using a KLM aircraft. KLM Fleet Services retains full responsibility for maintaining the two freighters and KLM engineering and maintenance will carry out these activities," the release added.

Martinair Holland is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the KLM Group. Martinair began operating in the passenger and cargo transport industry in 1958. Passenger services focuses on long-haul destinations in the Greater Caribbean. In the area of cargo transport, Martinair specialises in transporting perishable goods, hazardous goods and animals.
