Air transport in the first quarter of 2009

During the first three months of 2009, a total of 18.7 million passengers travelled from German airports. That was a decline of 1.9 million on the same quarter a year earlier. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), it was the strongest decrease (–9.3%) observed in the past 15 years. With the exception of the first quarter of 2002, the number of air passengers increased continuously over that period.

The volume of loaded air freight, which amounted to a total of 0.4 million tonnes, declined 14.7% in the first quarter of 2009.
