Dear Colleague

In my entire career in shipping I have not experienced such a serious set of challenges as we currently face. All stakeholders in our industry have had to fundamentally re-think their business strategies in order to survive and to continue to create value for the customers they serve.

Ship managers, whether they are in-house providers or independent third party specialists, are certainly no exception. The particular dilemma we face is how to add value to our ship owning clients in the short-term without losing sight of the longer term challenges, not least the continuing problem of attracting and retaining talented staff and the increasingly rigorous environmental regulatory agenda. Inevitably, given the nature of our business, we also need to address unforeseen issues as clearly demonstrated by the ongoing threat of piracy.

I certainly welcome the opportunity to debate these and other issues with my fellow members of InterManager and representatives from across our industry.

By engaging in this way, it is certainly helpful to me and I suspect to many others that we can share ideas from across a global and somewhat fragmented industry and challenge our thinking accordingly.

While we are faced with many uncertainties, one thing is clear. To do nothing about adapting to change is not an option. I look forward to helping to facilitate what I am sure will be a stimulating and thought provoking conference in one of the world's leading maritime centres. See you in Hamburg.
