While Light Rail in past Rail-Tech Europe Conferences has been playing mostly some niche role
the conference Light Rail and Liveable Cities (31st March 2009 to 1st April 2009) will be for the first time fully devoted to Light Rail issues. And even more, the discussion of Light Rail which always is strongly linked to urban planning issues will not be limited to pure technology themes! Environment, safety and technical trends will be the three focal strands which will allow a broad discussion both on status-quo, experience and future trends. Themes range from environmental argumentation in today’s transport planning and clean energy through safety aspects of urban rail schemes and the relation of cycling and public transport – friends or competitors? to tramways without overhead wires and a critical review of rubber-tyre tramway experience.
This means a high quality international programme beyond Rail and Tech!
Parallel to this conference on Light Rail, three other rail conferences are taking place at Rail-Tech® Europe 2009. These conferences are not specifically focussing on light rail, but more on long-distance railways, high speed and heavy haul and information systems.
Rail Infrastructure Maintenance
(full day programme on Tuesday 31 March 2009)
It will give an overview of new challenging maintenance concepts. We will hear the voices of infrastructure managers, the industry and infrastructure building and maintenance organisations. In general maintenance of rail infrastructure has to be carried out in less time and mostly during the night. During the limited time available a maximum achievement will have to be accomplished. This requires a long term planning and intensive cooperation of all parties concerned. A transparent and methodological approach between these parties is required. What are the latest major technological achievements in maintenance? These are among the issues which will be addressed.
Wayside Train Monitoring Systems
(half day programme in the morning on Wednesday 1 April 2009)
Due to the responsibility of railway infrastructure managers for operational safety over the last years, recent sensor systems for wayside train monitoring aspects have been developed. Starting in the 70s with first hot box detectors, the improvement continued and lead to systems with high performance. Also other equipment for measuring of dynamic forces (Q, Y) and flat spots were developed. Moreover the clearance profile can be checked with new technologies. This conference will give an overview of systems already installed with high performance as well as new developments which will enter the market soon.
Interoperability of Railway Information Systems- the InteGRail Project (in cooperation with UNIFE) (half day programme in the morning on Tuesday 31 March 2009)
Different sessions will show how integration of information systems and sharing of information increase performance of the railways players, be it railway undertakers, infrastructure managers or maintainers.
The EU research project InteGRail (Intelligent Integration of Railway Systems) is working on new solutions to achieve this. The workshop will show the technical developments of this research. The main result and innovative development of 4 years of research is the development of the common information platform IGRIS (InteGRail information system). Integrating existing information systems from different owners and systems IGRIS allows the railway players to speak to each other in one common language. The project presents pilot applications and tools that are using IGRIS. The tools have been tested in different demonstration places in Europe and showed their potential to improve performance of the users.
