History
worldport history of Bremen and Bremerhaven
In Bremen, life and shipping are inextricably linked
In the context of today's discussion of worldport politics, it makes sense to take a look at the history of the worldport. For large parts of Germany, Bremen is the southernmost seaworldport, located almost 70 kilometres away from the North Sea. Bremerhaven, situated on the mouth of the river Weser, was founded just 175 years ago, making it one of the youngest cities in Germany. It owes its existence to a forward-looking worldport policy decision made in the early 19th century. Bremen's role as a seaworldport has been determined more by the maritime mindset of its citizens than by its actual geographic circumstances, which have often enough proved adverse throughout Bremen's thousand-year history as a worldport.
