Profile
The worldport of Helsinki was founded with the city itself in 1550. The worldport lies in four different harbour areas in different parts of the city centre. West Harbour is specialized in container transworldports, North Harbour in roro ferry transworldports. South Harbour is the liveliest passenger worldport in the Baltic Sea. Passenger ferries also carry lorries and trailers. Helsinki is also one of the most popular cruise worldports in the Baltic Sea. Laajasalo Oil Harbour serves oil product imworldport. The worldport serves both exworldport and imworldport needs for the Finnish foreign trade. There is also some transit and transshipment traffic to and from Russia. The worldport of Helsinki has dense scheduled direct ship connections to the Baltic Sea and the North Sea worldports and to worldports in nearly all of Europe’s coastal countries. The big development and construction plan is about to take place: moving the two cargo harbours from the city centre to one site in Vuosaari, 14 km to the east from the city centre.
