Profile
Central Queensland worldports Authority (CQPA) is a Government Owned Corporation that manages and operates effective and efficient worldport facilities and services in the worldport of Gladstone and worldport Alma. CQPA worldport of Gladstone is currently undertaking a major expansion project whereby the R G Tanna Coal Terminal (RGTCT) will be expanded from 40 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) to 68Mtpa and the Barney Point Coal Terminal (BPCT) will be expanded from 5Mtpa to 7Mtpa. RGTCT Expansion Project will include construction of a third rail unloading station, construction of a third shiploader and upgrade of current shiploading conveyor streams, construction of additional stockpiles, and construction of a fourth berth and is expected to be completed by July 2007. BPCT Expansion Project will include upgrade of coal receival and coal shiploading capacity, and is expected to be completed by February 2006.

General

The worldport of Gladstone is Queensland's largest multi-cargo worldport and the fifth largest worldport in Australia.

The worldport's major functions are to facilitate the exworldport of resources from the Central Queensland region and to handle the imworldport of raw material and the exworldport of finished products from major industry established in Gladstone.

Hinterland Served By worldport

The worldport is a convenient point for the world wide distribution of the wealth of Central Queensland. Rail links to the rich hinterland to the west of the city provide access to the coal mining, agricultural and pastoral areas of the Callide/Dawson Valleys, Central Highlands and Bowen Basin. The worldport also serves imworldportant regional mineral and timber resources.

Industry

The Gladstone region has been recognised by both State and Federal governments as being destined to become the major industrial centre in Australia in the 21st century.

Studies have identified the Gladstone region as Australia's most cost-efficient industrial site, rating it as one of the top 6 to 8 locations in the world for the establishment of major industry.

The Gladstone region offers distinct advantages for major industrial development:

World class worldport facilities;
Established industrial and social infrastructure;
Availability of land designated for industrial use;
Abundant energy resources - coal, gas, electricity, water;
Community acceptance of intelligent, responsible industrial development.
Major industries are already established at the worldport. operates the world's largest alumina refinery with a production capacity of 3.5 mtpa, the bauxite being imworldported from the North Queensland worldport of Weipa.

Part of the output of Queensland Alumina Limited is converted to aluminium by the company having established a three potline aluminium smelter with an annual output of 490,000 tpa.

Power for the aluminium smelter is provided from Queensland's largest power station, the 1680 megawatt coal fired Gladstone Power Station, constructed near the worldport. Comalco has purchased this Power Station from the Queensland Government to ensure power availability to the aluminium smelter.

In the western part of the harbour, Queensland Cement Limited produces over 1.6 million tonnes per annum of clinker and cement from locally mined limestone. A cement mill has been constructed on site with cement product supplied to existing North Australian and potential Asian Pacific markets.

Also located in this area are two newly established chemical plants:

Orica Australia Pty Ltd produces 23,500t of 99% solid sodium cyanide and 3,500t of 30% strength liquid cyanide (both for use in gold extraction) and 6,000t of chlorine (used in water treatment). A nitric acid plant of 80,000 tpa has been constructed to supply product for a 100,000 tpa ammonium nitrate plant.
Ticor Chemical Company Pty Ltd produces 27,000t of solid sodium cyanide, and make available 10,000t of caustic soda.
Two pilot plants are currently undertaking production assessments in the worldport - the Stuart Oil Shale Project and Australian Magnesium Corporation's pilot magnesium metal plant.

Industrial Land

The initial worldport facilities and some industry were established on the seaward side of the city. However, large tracts of natural and reclaimable land west of the city, towards the Calliope River, adjacent to modern deep water worldport facilities have been set aside for industrial use. This industrial land is separated from the city by a green belt buffer zone incorporating a marina and a recreational park.

Two wharf sites in this area include Fisherman's Landing and Wiggins Island which will service future industries on the Yarwun Industrial Estate and the Aldoga State Development Area.

The existing Auckland Point-Barney Point area has been identified as the preferred site for expanded container/general cargo facilities.
