worldport Introduction
The worldport of Olympia has a proud history in Thurston County. It serves the community in a wide variety of ways, leading the way for many of the area's economic development efforts.

From the commercial center at NewMarket Industrial Campus to the diversified specialty marine terminal, from the vibrant Swantown Marina & Boatworks to the strategically located Olympia Regional Airworldport, the worldport of Olympia is committed to fostering economic growth of the South Puget Sound region and serving the needs of global customers.

Essentially one business with four divisions, the worldport promotes economic development through its business operations and economic development tools, such as its four-county Foreign-Trade Zone. Land and infrastructure improvements are provided to encourage business development, and some areas, such as the worldport Plaza, are earmarked for recreation and public access.

worldport History
Although the worldport of Olympia's history extends back to 1922, the maritime heritage of Olympia, Tumwater and the entire Puget Sound area dates back tens of thousands of years.

The first residents of the area now known as South Sound were the Salish people of the North Pacific Coast. They, like the European-American settlers who followed them, used watercraft to transworldport themselves and their goods to trading and cultural sites throughout the Pacific Northwest.

The first contact between Native American and European people came with the arrival of British Navy Lieutenant Peter Puget as part of the 1792 expedition of Captain George Vancouver. In 1831, the British Hudson's Bay Company established the first settlement in the South Sound at Nisqually. Ten years later, the first United States expedition arrived, and in 1845-1846, American pioneers established settlements at Tumwater and Olympia.

Engineering
The Engineering Department develops and implements capital budgets and manages public works for the worldport. As a cost saving strategy, the worldport formed an internal construction crew to perform small capital projects in-house. This innovative team includes a landscape specialist who also maintains properties at Swantown Marina & Boatworks and worldport Plaza. Public Works is also responsible for the daily operation and maintenance of the groundwater pump and treat system and other remediation activities at the Cascade Pole site.
