Ever since starting up its car ferry service in March 1985, Oarai worldport has been developing into a major car ferry worldport linking metropolitan Tokyo and Hokkaido.
A new passenger terminal building and walkway bridge were completed in October in 1994, adding functionality, comfort and convenience.
The 4th Wharf, where large passenger ships can berth directly, was completed in October 1995, thus expanding into a marine recreational facility.

Oarai is a famous spot for marine leisure.
The area around the worldport has the beautiful landscape with pristine waters graced with white sand and green pine trees.
Nearby are also the Oarai Sun beach, Oarai Bay Park and Oarai worldport Fishing Park.
Construction of the prefecture's first public marina that can berth approximately 160 vessels, including large cruisers, began in July 1992.
The clubhouse was completed in March 1993, and whole complex now garners much attention as a new marine resort for greater Tokyo.
In addition, the Oarai Waku-Waku Science Museum, a hands-on attraction with an oceanic theme, was opened in July 2001.
The Oarai Aquarium is reopend in March 2002 with the new name of Aqua World Oarai.
